Christianity embraced the authoritarianism, obscurantism and anti-intellectualism of the Roman Catholic Church as well as the liberating influences of Wyckliffe, Luther, Hus and many others.

I think that liberal concern for the poor deviates from the Pope's "concern for the poor" in many ways, not the least of which are the thoughtful liberal's recognition that minimum wage laws impoverish the worker and that the Pope's pro-natalism serves to impoverish and destroy the entire planet, including its water, energy resources, food, and plant and animal species.
