Steve, what I find troubling about Obama's statement is the conflation of two separate questions--1)whether justice is only procedural and 2)whether violence is justified in the face of injustice. Since for the vast majority of Americans, including African-Americans, the answer to 2) is "only in the rarest of circumstances, then conflating these questions effectively forecloses the first. Perhaps our task should be to insist that the two be clearly differentiated and each debated separately. Otherwise we quickly get to a point at which anyone who disagrees with the procedural definition of justice is aiding and abetting terrorism (a position explicitly taken by the Bush administration of course).
