Thanks very much for this, Patrick. I still remember reading, as a youngster long ago, an obscure little book titled 'Beyond the Chains of Illusion.' Along with 'Karamazov,' it was one of the most compelling things I'd ever read. I've thought of EF with affection as a sort of grandfather or great uncle ever since. The kind of man of whom one can say 'bless him' without feeling ironic about it.
