I like Raymond Tallis's pithy observation that "without embodiment the intuition 'I' cannot be individuated." Nevertheless, he makes it clear the manner in which we may appreciate our intuition that we are and are not identical to our bodies (in which case we can speak of a gap between being a body...and the being of that body, or the ambivalence relationship we have with our bodies, an ambivalence Tallis spells out with the example of suffering). In fact, in several works Tallis has attempted to explain just how the (animal) body is the point of the origin of self-consciousness: "self-consciousness in its most basic form is a realisation that passes across a conscious body that it IS the body; the awakening of the body to itself."
