Tikkun sent an e-mail today observing that cuts to programs that affect the poor are very much in contemplation in the current negotiations. Tikkun urges people to contact their representatives. Here is what I wrote: "In settling the debt limit crisis, please vote against any package that includes cuts in Head Start, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), food aid, or poverty-focused development assistance. Do not harm the poor! Better to let the Republicans cause a big crisis to their detriment than allowing them to undermine the moral fiber of the country by a thousand cuts."

It wouldn't cost that much to bus all our poor, not to mention our Native Americans, Blacks and Hispanics, to our national parks and forests, where their faces haven't been seen for ages. It may be their last chance to get to know White AARP Country Clubs.
