Speaking of Gandhi, there has been a lot in the religious news lately about a new book by the mega-church pastor Rob Bell in which he questions some common conservative understandings of hell. Arguing that conservative evangelical assumptions that all non-Christians are headed for hell is morally reprehensible, especially when one considers Gandhi, for example, Bell is trying to carve out a different understanding of hell for himself and his followers.
He would do very well to read the recent piece on the Huffington Post by Rita Nakashima Brock, called "Should Donald Rumsfeld Go to Hell?" {http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rita-nakashima-brock-ph-d/should-donald-rumsfeld-go_b_830874.html] It's a remarkable piece by Brock, one that captures the historic political entanglements of the Christian doctrine of hell. It also puts forth a theological vision of heaven and hell that those on the religious left will, I suspect, find very intriguing.
