A new report shows that Catholics support rights for gays and lesbians in numbers greater than other Christians or non-Christians. For example, 75% support gay marriage or state-recognized unions. This is contrary to the teaching of church leaders, of course. But so are the views of Catholics on contraception and divorce and remarriage. The days of authoritative pronouncements by Catholic leaders has long passed. What is surprising about the report, I think, is the comparison with other groups. I would not have expected Catholics to lead the way on this issue. For details, see here.
There's something wrong with the "here" link.
But as far as I can tell, the analysis takes no cognizance of the fact that many folks, atheists included, do not even favor rights (which indeed are special rights) for heterosexual married couples. These rights clearly discriminate against singles and the childfree, and on the basis of fairness and justice should be eliminated, not promoted.
Granting those same marital rights to homosexual couples would only exacerbate the discrimination against singles.
