"[Kung] believes that given a choice between living a life in a meaningless universe or in universe created by a loving God where we are called to be disciples, we should choose to believe in the latter."

The problem I have with that statement is that, if anything has meaning, it is Truth. Since there is either no evidence or indeed contrary evidence that we live in a universe created by a loving God where we are called to be disciples, Truth demands that we choose the non-existence of God over belief in a loving one.

And this apart from the fact that Kung's statement offers a totally false dichotomy if I ever saw one. How about we live in a world created by a Creator tossing dice?
