James W. Douglass has written an important new book on JFK, Obama, and confrontations with the military industrial complex particularly the military. I have not read the book yet, but I have spoken with those who have, and they maintain that the evidence he provides on the assassination is disturbing. At a minimum, he provides fascinating material on JFK and Obama's relations with the military and their attempts to control the executive. For a sample, you can read this excerpt in the current issue of Tikkun. The excerpt does not discuss the role of Pope John XXIII, but the book does. He played a role as intermediary between JFK and Khruschev, who wanted to maintain a back channel for conversations about peace, without alerting the military of their respective countries. Douglass is a Catholic Worker so he has a particular interest in Dorothy Day who we learn met with the Kennedys and in Gandhi who plays an even larger role in the book. The book is definitely in my to read pile.
