Maybe it's the hour, but the unpleasant facts in the Schroth article strike me as particularly depressing.
Based on my own life history and that of others I grew up with, I've always had this vision of children being able to surmount the unfavorable circumstances of birth. To do so took the commitment of a strong, supportive family as well as public goods, like free schools and libraries and their dedicated staff. In that respect, the emergence of the Jewish intelligencia comes to mind as the paragon of immigrant success stories.
At this late date in my life, the reality is a bitter pill to swallow. But again, maybe it's just the hour.
