Perhaps I should say "dissident" Catholic parish is in trouble. Whatever. For the interesting story--in the New York Times, under the headline "Renegade Priest Leads a Split St. Louis Parish"--click here.
As a periodic resident of San Diego (fall semesters), I am aware of, though have not visited, an "unofficial" Catholic parish, aptly named "Mary Magdalene Apostle: Catholic Community San Diego", the pastor of which is a woman priest. Check it out, here. I wonder how many such parishes there are in the United States.
The parish to which my family and I belonged in Evanston, Illinois, named "St. Nicholas", was "official" but pretty progressive nonetheless. Whether it is still so, I don't know; my family and I left Chicago thirteen years ago this summer. Our older child--Daniel--turned eight that summer (1997). In a surprising (to me) twist of fate, Daniel, who just turned twenty-one, is now back in Evanston, where, next month, he will begin his junior year (Northwestern.)
