To a freethinker and atheist, a cemetery itself is sectarian, as are moments of silence, recitations of the Pledge of Allegiance and standing for the Star Spangled Banner.

Any ritual, particularly one instigated by or supported by the government, is religious in nature. Religion, if anything, is irrational, thoughtless, or group-think behavior. Buying indulgences, buying insurance, circumcising so the kid can look like Daddie, getting married and passing around birthday cards in the office come to mind.

It is offensive when society disfavors folks who do not want to participate in these religious activities of others.
