It is ironic that those who argue that government properly put up a Cross to honor the war dead (including the non-Christian dead?) in the Mojave Desert argue that the primary meaning of the cross is not religious, but historical and cultural, even though the reason they want the cross to be displayed is religious in character. Advancing religion through hypocrisy is not unprecedented, but it is not admirable either.
The Establishment Clause would not have been passed were it not for the support of the Baptists. They were quite aware that it is no victory for religion when government uses religion for secular ends or seeks to secularize religious symbols. With the exception of the American Baptist wing of that church, the Baptists have abandoned that wisdom. For a dispute among evangelicals on the case, see the Huffington Post.
