I was trying to think of a former Senator for the Court. I've come up with Al Gore. For those who worry that he is too old, I say that he has 19 years of life expectancy. (Sotomayor has only six more years of life expectancy than him). Gore did not finish law school (completing two years, I believe) because he left to run for office, but there is a strong argument that two years of law school is enough for anyone, let alone a Supreme Court justice. His experience in American politics vastly outweighs what he might have learned and forgotten in that last year at Vanderbilt.
We have a Court filled with former judges; it would benefit from having a member who was elected President.
